Biology - KS5
Students at SJB study Biology to better understand the living world and their place within it. A level Biology gives them the tools to question, investigate, and appreciate the complexity of life, while preparing them to make informed contributions to society.
Exam Board: OCR
Qualification: A Level Biology A (H420). 100% exam-based.
A Level Biology OCR A Specification
A Level Biology is a fascinating and challenging subject for students who are curious about the natural world and want to explore life from the molecular level to entire ecosystems. It is a perfect choice for those who enjoy practical investigation, applying theory to real-world issues, and developing analytical and problem-solving skills.
This course provides a solid foundation for further study in science, medicine, and a wide range of careers where logical thinking and research skills are essential.
The course is divided into six modules:
Module 1 – Development of Practical Skills in Biology
Practical skills are embedded throughout the course and assessed in the written exams and Practical Endorsement.
Module 2 – Foundations in Biology
- Cell structure
- Biological molecules
- Nucleotides and nucleic acids
- Enzymes
- Biological membranes
- Cell division, diversity and organisation
Module 3 – Exchange and Transport
- Exchange surfaces
- Transport in animals
- Transport in plants
Module 4 – Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease
- Communicable diseases
- The immune system
- Biodiversity
- Classification and evolution
Module 5 – Communication, Homeostasis and Energy
- Communication and homeostasis
- Excretion
- Nervous and hormonal communication
- Photosynthesis
- Respiration
Module 6 – Genetics, Evolution and Ecosystems
- Cellular control
- Patterns of inheritance
- Manipulating genomes
- Cloning and biotechnology
- Ecosystems and populations
Students studying A Level Biology will develop:
- A deep understanding of living systems and scientific principles
- Practical laboratory and fieldwork skills, including the ability to design and carry out experiments
- Data analysis and problem-solving abilities
- Critical thinking skills to evaluate evidence and theories
- Preparation for careers in medicine, veterinary science, environmental science, research, and beyond
To be successful in A Level Biology, students must be both scientifically curious and ready to engage with challenging concepts.
Entry Requirements:
- A minimum of grade 7 in GCSE Biology (or 7-7 in Combined Science) is essential
- A grade 6 in maths is desirable.
Assessment is by three written papers at the end of Year 13, as well as a separately reported Practical Endorsement.
- Paper 1 – Biological Processes (37%)
Assesses content from Modules 1, 2, 3 and 5
- Paper 2 – Biological Diversity (37%)
Assesses content from Modules 1, 2, 4 and 6
- Paper 3 – Unified Biology (26%)
Draws on content from across all modules
- Practical Endorsement (reported separately)
Based on the completion of a series of required practical activities assessed across the two years
