PE - KS3
Students at SJB study PE because it guides & inspires them to maintain optimum health & fitness for the rest of their lives. They will develop physical literacy & experience positive feelings around physical activity, building confidence in their bodies.
PE develops a range of life skills including leadership, teamwork and a resilience to physical and mental challenges. For many students, physical education will be a source of great passion & can foster a curiosity in the limits of human health & performance.

Students experience a broad and varied range of activities throughout Key Stage 3, including invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding games, and artistic activities. While the development of movement skills is a key focus, our curriculum also emphasises fostering enjoyment and confidence, promoting health and fitness, and nurturing leadership, life skills, and morals.
All students participate in two inter-house competitions a year. Along with receiving house points for participation and winning matches, the PE department also look for teams who demonstrate cohesion, effective communication and sportsmanship on and off the court/pitch.
Additionally, the PE department offer a wide range of extra curricular sport clubs that are open to all and also offer the opportunity to represent SJB in matches against other schools.
In the first four weeks, Year 7 students participate in a diverse range of activities designed to build on their foundation of primary school physical education. These include fundamental movement skill games, selected fitness tests, and various sport categories such as net and wall games and invasion games. This introductory phase enables the PE department to assess each student’s abilities and appropriately place them into a set that provides a safe, supportive, and motivating environment, allowing every student to thrive in physical education.
Following this initial period, students will experience a broad range of sports throughout the year on a four-week rotational basis. Each rotation focuses on developing core skills and laying a solid foundation for further development in future years tactical understanding.
As a PE department, we recognise that students develop at different rates and therefore reviewing set placements is part of our practice to ensure students are in the most suitable learning environment.
In Year 8, students continue to build on the foundations established in Year 7 by developing sport-specific skills through a wide range of activities. Lessons focus on refining technique, improving tactical awareness, and deepening understanding of game strategies and rules. Students are encouraged to apply their skills in competitive and cooperative situations, demonstrating teamwork, decision-making, and resilience. By the end of the year, students will have a more comprehensive understanding of the full context of each sport or event, preparing them for more advanced performance and analysis in future years.

In Year 9 PE, students focus on applying their skills effectively within the full context of games and events. Lessons emphasise the use of tactics and strategies to maximise performance and enhance understanding of competitive situations. Students are encouraged to make informed decisions, adapt to changing scenarios, and demonstrate effective communication and teamwork. By the end of the year, students will have developed a deeper tactical awareness and the ability to apply their skills with confidence and precision in a variety of sporting contexts.
