English - KS4
Students at SJB study English because it defines our reality – from the way that we think, to the words that we speak, to the way that we write. Language enriches students’ minds with an understanding, respect and empathy for different voices from across time and cultures. By studying English, students will engage with the world outside of the classroom, become more confident in their self-expression, and develop an appreciation of language in all its forms.

Students begin their GCSE studies with Romeo and Juliet in the final term of year 9. This allows us time to fully read and annotate the Literature texts; students all have their own copies with their own notes. They will study An Inspector Calls, Jekyll and Hyde and Unseen Poetry in year 10, with the Anthology poetry in year 11. Each unit of work will have an assessment at the end. Literature Paper 1 is assessed in the year 10 exams, and Literature Paper 2 in the year 11 mocks. After Christmas of year 11, students will continue to be assessed on the areas that are most needed in the lead up to the exams.
