Sociology - KS5
Students at SJB study Sociology to develop an inquisitive mind and a critical approach to understanding the world around them. They appreciate and celebrate diversity, leading to a feeling of security in their own identity. Our students assess society as it is, and explore how they can be a force for change.
What is Sociology A-level?
Sociology is scientific study of society and social interactions. It studies the underlying reasons for why society functions as it does, and the positive and negative consequences of human behaviour and social structures on society.

What is studied? Sociology is studied over two years and covers 6 topics in total. The topics and their corresponding papers can be seen in the table:

For students to be successful in Sociology they must be both interested in the subject and able to write!
Entry Requirements:
- A minimum of a grade 6 in GCSE RE (or English if not studied RE)
Sociology as a discipline draws on many key skills which will be gained and/or developed over the course of the A-level. As an essay based subject, literacy skills are especially developed over the duration of the course.
- Written Skills
Sociology is primarily an essay based subject. Students will be supported in honing their written skills in order to produce high quality essays which draw on key knowledge, theories and research in Sociology. Written communication is so vital to our futures and used in so many ways- Sociology will support the development of students in writing clearly, concisely and coherently.
- Evaluative Skills
The Sociology a-level helps students to work on their evaluative skills. Much of sociology involves exploring theories, research and concepts and analysing them for their strengths, weaknesses and relative contribution to society. Students will develop skills in critically evaluating and explaining this in their written work.
Sociology A-level is 100% exam.
Students sit 3 exam papers at the end of Year 13
Paper 1: 1 hour 30 minutes
Papers 2 & 3: 2 hours 15 minutes
