Core PE - KS4

Choose a subject

Students at SJB study PE because it guides & inspires them to maintain optimum health & fitness for the rest of their lives.

They will develop physical literacy & experience positive feelings around physical activity, building confidence in their bodies.

PE develops a range of life skills including leadership, teamwork & a resilience to physical & mental challenges. For many students, physical education will be a source of great passion & can foster a curiosity in the limits of human health & performance.

All students continue with Core PE throughout Years 10 and 11. Students are given the opportunity to choose a pathway after having experienced a broad range of sports at KS3. For more information, please see below.

Students participate in two inter-house competitions a year. Along with receiving house points for participation and winning matches, the PE department also look for teams who demonstrate cohesion, effective communication and sportsmanship on and off the court/pitch.

Additionally, the PE department offer a wide range of extra curricular sport clubs that are open to all and also offer the opportunity to represent SJB in matches against other schools.

In Years 10 and 11, students select a pathway that allows them to choose from a range of sports and activities that reflect their interests and preferences in PE. There are up to five different pathways available, which include a variety of sports and fitness options.

Each year, we conduct a student voice that empowers them to contribute to the design and development of their KS4 PE experience. By gathering student feedback from all pathways, the PE department is able to design a curriculum that is relevant, engaging, and inclusive, reflecting the diverse interests and motivations of all learners. This approach supports the department’s aim of promoting lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.

We include fitness and rock climbing in every pathway as they are integral to developing well-rounded, physically literate students. This approach provides all learners with a balance of traditional and alternative activities, opportunities to develop transferable skills and lifelong interests, and a consistent focus on personal development, health, fitness, and wellbeing.

KS4 Core PE is designed to provide students with the opportunity to further develop their movement skills across a range of activities in fully applied contexts. Lessons focus on enjoyment, active participation, and lifelong fitness, encouraging students to discover activities they can continue beyond school. Students are guided to take greater ownership of their learning through approaches such as the Sport Education model. Our aim is to equip all students with the knowledge, skills, and habits necessary to maintain a physically active and healthy lifestyle beyond their school years.
