Additional Maths & Statistics - KS4
Studying Additional Maths and Statistics extends the GCSE Maths content enabling students to develop their problem-solving, logical reasoning, data analysis and mathematical knowledge.
This course is aimed at the highest achieving mathematicians; students who are on track to achieve grades 8 or 9 in GCSE Maths and are intending to continue studying maths through to A Level. It is a fantastic opportunity to help prepare for A Level Maths as well as future A Level studies in subjects like Geography, Psychology and the Sciences (please note it is not a pre-requisite for A Level Maths or any other A Level subject!)
Throughout the two year course students will achieve two highly regarded qualifications; GCSE Statistics and Level 3 OCR FSMQ Additional Maths.
Year 1
Exam Board: Edexcel
Specification: GCSE Statistics https://qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/edexcel-gcses/statistics-2017.html.
The course is examined by two 90-minute exams; students will be entered for Higher Tier. This course sits nicely alongside the Year 10 Maths GCSE content, overlapping in a handful of places but also introducing topics like Statistical Probability Distributions, and Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (which is in the A Level maths course) and Spearman's Rank correlation coefficient (which appears in A Level Geography and Psychology).
Year 2
Exam Board: OCR
Specification: Level 3 OCR FSMQ Additional Maths https://www.ocr.org.uk/qualifications/fsmq/additional-mathematics/specification-at-a-glance/.
The course is examined in one 2-hour exam which will be sat at the end of Year 11. As a Level 3 qualification it will enable students to bank some UCAS points too! The content of the Additional Maths specification overlaps in various places with the GCSE so students studying this course will strengthen and consolidate their GCSE knowledge, as well as developing many of those topics, providing an excellent introduction to many areas covered in A Level Maths.
